Response to Taran G's Week #2 Eureka Moment
So i enjoyed your post for a couple reasons. First i started dating my boyfriend when i was 16 and we have been dating ever since. We have been together 8 years now and we are still as happy as we ever were. One of the reasons i believe we are so happy is neither one of us gave up our own lives just to make our relationship stronger. We live together now so it was a little weired at first to live in the same house and have our own lives but within the last year we have managed to integrate both our lives together so that it works out for the best of both. I have never been at his becon call nor have i asked him to be at mine. While we do a lot together now we still have a couple days where i need a strictly girls day and he needs to hang with just the guys. Now i feel that being able to do all of the above has made it better for us in the long run. Thats more than i can say for my best friend. When i was in high school my best friend spend a lot of time with my boyfriend and i but never once did either of us make her feel/ or treat her like she was the 3rd wheel. She never really dated anyone in high school and when she did we all went on double dates. Well last year she met a guy on eharmony. Dont get me wrong i dont have anything against finding someone through an online dating website but i think her relationship is out of control. Since she met him a little over a year ago she has almost completly shut me out, she only calls when she needs something, she is now living with him and getting married in august ALL WITHIN 1 YEAR. Keep in mind that we are only 23. Whenever i am alone with them they act like i am not even there. I dont understand how all those years i can go out of my way to make her feel like she isnt a 3rd wheel just to have her turn around and not pay the same respect to me. The relationship is all wrong, i think they havent known eachother well enough to get married but thats just my opinion. How can you really know someone that well in just 1 year? Maybe thats just me.Its sad to say that i am losing a really close friend over a guy but i guess its more common then i thought i just never expected a guy to come between a friendship, my boyfriend would never even think about getting in the way of my friendships with my girlfriends!

Response to Kesha's Week 2 Erueka Moment
I really loved your post and the references that you posted not only because i directly effects you but because i am going throught the same exact thing! I have been with my boyfriend for 9 years living together for 6. We have talked extensively about getting married but have come to the agreement that we would like to be more financially set before we decide to get hitched. Although we see this as a great plan and feel that we are doing right by waiting until we can afford it there are many people on both sides of our family that don's agree. We have aunts and uncles that think we are not living together because if they knew we were they would call us sinners and everything else along those lines. We also have family that tell us to get married or seperate. It almost seems as though they thing the only right thing for us to do at this point in time is get married because we have been together for so long. Personally we are happy as a couple, happier than a lot of married couples that rushed into their marriages so we dont see anything wrong with our living situation. It is our lives and our decision. I believe that some of them are jelous of what we have as a couple and thats why they want us to seperate or get married. It just seems as though everyone believes that the kind of happiness that we share as a couple shouldnt go without marriage!

Week #2 Eureka Moment
I work for a pharmaceutical company and we do a lot of blood draws and things of that nature in our facility. On friday we were having a refresher meeting on how to correctly store and discard new and used needles. While we were watching this presentation the lady giving it was talking about HIV. What caught my attention was that woman are just as likely if not more likely to be infected with HIV than men yet we still continue to represent HIV as a mans disease, meaning that woman need to be careful about the men they are sleeping with because they could be transmit HIV. There is not problem with woman being careful about who they are sleeping with but in recent years we should be telling men to watch out as well. I am myself am guilty of believing that it was mostly men that were carriers until i was shown the numbers in the meeting. Roughly 1 in 11 people are infected with HIV 58% of which are female so why are we still representing this as a mostle male dominant disease? Shouldnt we be changing our warning to extend them to everyone?

Response to Professor Week 1
I definitely think that the marketing of toys is biased when it comes to whether they would be best suited for boys or girls. Watch nickelodeon or Disney channel for 10 minutes and you will see five different commercials each on advertising for a toy if the toy is race cars or nerf guns all the kids in the commercial will be boys and more than likely all the colors will be anything but pink, if the commercial is dolls all the kids will be girls and the commercial will involve nothing but the colors pink and purple. When I was growing up I didn’t want anything to do with dolls I wanted the race cars, nerf guns, and motorcycles. Most parents would have a problem with me wanting to play with those types of things but mine allowed me to play with what I wanted. I grew up a tom boy and to this day I am still a tom boy. While I still love to get my hand dirty and ride dirt bikes I still like to act and dress like a girl when im out on the town. Allowing me to express myself through toys and motocross as a kid has made me who I am today. I do believe that the toys that we have as kids does affect the way they grow up in many ways but I don’t think that we should control the things that our kids want to play with just to try to prevent them from growing up to be someone the parents don’t want them to be. I have an friend that has a 2 year old boy. When he was a baby I wanted to buy him this pink shirt that said “Real men wear pink” I thought it was the cutest thing I had seen in a long time but my friend absolutely refused to dress her boy in a pink shirt. Her husband fears that if they show him that pink is ok then he won’t grow up to play sports or be manly. I was astonished like somehow dressing a baby boy was going to alter the way he lived the rest of his life, like the color blue and green were somehow going to make him into a top list athlete. Children should be able to express themselves through toys, if we tell them what they can and can’t play with then we are not allowing them to express themselves and their interests.
